PhD position in Environmental Economics with a focus on preferences for risk adaption and mitigation under climate change uncertainty

This PhD position is part of a 3-year research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The project aims to contribute to the existing environmental economics literature by providing new theoretical and empirical insights into preferences for risk adaptation and mitigation under uncertainty in stated choice experiments. The main objectives of the project are to develop a novel theoretical framework combining different disciplinary theories and approaches for explaining risk adaptation and mitigation preferences under various climate change scenarios and to gather empirical data to test and improve the theoretical framework in the context of national and international flood mitigation and adaptation policies. The project will be carried out jointly with the Department of Environmental Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The PhD student will be based at Eawag and enrolled in the Environmental Economics PhD program in Amsterdam. The preferred starting date is March 2015.

The prospective candidate should hold a master degree in environmental or behavioral economics, or another related economics discipline. Experience and affinity with economic valuation methods, environmental risks or natural disasters is an advantage. The position requires strong statistical and econometric skills and a good command of English in speaking and writing. German language skills are an asset.
