The course provides an understanding of the fundamental concepts of Corporate Finance. Topics covered include corporate governance, the risk and return underpinnings of the cost of capital, capital structure choice, dividends, merger and acquisitions

Each student is expected to present a number of articles during the semester. The presenter should be very knowledgeable about the particular research and be able to answer any questions about it. Students are also expected to critique each of these papers and identify new lines of research.

Session 1: Introduction of Corporate Finance – Agency problems and Corporate Governance

Session 2: Seminar 1: Paper presentation and leading class discussion

Session 3: Risk and returns, portfolio theory and the CAPM

Session 4: Seminar 2: Paper presentation and leading class discussion

Session 5: Capital structure, the MM propositions, trade-off and pecking order theories

Session 6: Seminar 3: Paper presentation and leading class discussion

Session 7: Dividend and payout policy

Session 8: Seminar 4: Paper presentation and leading class discussion

Session 9: Mergers and Acquisitions, and Corporate Restructurings

Session 10: Seminar 5: Paper presentation and leading class discussion

Performance will be evaluated on the basis of a group presentation, a midterm exam and a final exam, weighed as follows:

  • Group (Paper presentation) : 20%
  • Individual (Synopsis +Term project): 30%
  • Final exam: 50%

  • Corporate Finance, 10e, Ross, Westerfield, and Jaffee, McGraw-Hill/Irwin.
