Abstract:
Merge and acquisition are a consequence of economic growth overtime. It may be due to competition, the growth of foreign direct and indirect investment flows as well as the proactive integration with the economy. It is observable that when the economy experiences significant variation of growth, M&A appears to be more active. However, there is heterogeneity of bank performance due to M&A.
The main objective of this study is to analyze factors that affect the performance of commercial banks in Vietnam pre and post M&A from 2010 to 2020. The study uses balanced panel data of all 27 commercial banks in Vietnam over 11 years between 2010 and 2020. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique and Pooled Ordinary Least Squared were employed to calculate the technical efficiency of commercial banks and analyze the variation of efficiency level. The main finding is that there exists room for banks to improve their performance. As well, M&A is an important efficiency determinant. The study also suggested several solutions to possibly improve the performance of commercial banks in Vietnam.
