SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP26 - Nguyễn Phúc Phương Vy
DESCRIPTION:Economic development and PM2.5 emissions: Empirical evidence from Vietnam’s industrial zones \nStudent: Nguyễn Phúc Phương Vy\, VNP26 \nSupervisor: Dr. Phạm Khánh Nam \nAbstract: \nThis thesis investigates the relationship between environmental degradation and economic development. The research uses satellite data to estimate panel data models of 245 industrial zones from 1998 to 2016. The regression results show that there is an inverted Ushaped curve between economic development and emissions of fine particulate matter. In addition\, there is evidence that there exists a spillover effect of fine particulate matter density between neighboring industrial zones. \nKeywords: Environmental Kuznets curve (EKC)\, Spatial econometric approach\nJEL: C23\, Q53 \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP26 - Đoàn Hồ Đan Tâm
DESCRIPTION:The impact of human development on corruption in Vietnamese provinces: A spatial econometrics analysis \nStudent: Đoàn Hồ Đan Tâm\, VNP26 \nSupervisor: Dr. Lê Thái Thường Quân \nAbstract: \nWhile there is long interest in the impact of corruption\, the research on determinants of corruption is still less\, especially the effect of human development on corruption. This research examines the impact of human development on corruption at the provincial level of 63 provinces in Vietnam for the period 2011–2020. Corruption is measured using two alternative indicators: The Control of Corruption from Provincial Governance Public Administration Performance Index (PAPI) and the Informal Charges from the Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI). Human development is measured using income per capita\, literacy ratio\, and training ratio. The spatial panel techniques are used to handle possible spatial dependencies with contiguity and distance–based weight matrices. The results show that income per capita has a strong effect on reducing corruption in the case of Control of Corruption; however\, it increases the corruption in the case of Informal Charge. Education\noverall has the effect of reducing corruption\, though small. Spatial effects are also confirmed for both indicators of corruption\, though with different specifications. This research contributes to the field of empirical study on determinants of corruption with up–to–date data for the context of Vietnam and using spatial econometrics approach for analysis. \nKeywords: Corruption\, Human Development\, Spatial Effect\, Vietnam \nJEL classification: D73\, C2\, O1 \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 - Võ Phước Trí
DESCRIPTION:Tracking growth during the new wave of COVID-19 using Google Trends \nStudent: Võ Phước Trí\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Trần Thị Tuấn Anh \nAbstract: \nThe immediate impact of coronavirus requires the high-frequency data to adapt well to the variation of the macro-economy. Applying the Artificial Neural Network algorithm\, this thesis aims to construct a Weekly Tracker\, which is used for tracking the growth rate\, from the Google Trends dataset. Compared to the Autoregressive model\, this thesis shows that predictions from the Artificial Neural Network algorithm outperform in leading information of growth rate movement. The Weekly Tracker suggests that the recovery of 22 economies in the sample has been constrained during the new wave of Covid-19. The growth rate estimate may be still positive\, but the trend is horizontal\, even in developed countries. And with the Shapley value analysis\, this thesis finds out Consumption topics and categories\, especially trade and services\, are the variables that have a key role for the recovery; Economic Anxiety topics and categories are extremely popular during the coronavirus spread out\, especially in the beginning\, and have large negative contributions; number searches of Labor Market and Health Condition topics and categories also increase during the pandemic and they contribute positively to the Weekly Tracker. Focusing on Vietnam\, this thesis finds out the down trend of the Weekly Tracker during the social-distancing and locked down period in Ho Chi Minh City\, same as the movement of Consumption searches number. \nJEL Classification: O11\, C14\, C45 \nKeywords: growth rate\, pandemic time\, Covid-19 pandemic\, neural network\, machine learning\, Shapley values \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 - Trịnh Quốc Minh
DESCRIPTION:Financial development and energy consumption: Which causes which in the Asia Pacific region? \nStudent: Trịnh Quốc Minh\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Võ Hồng Đức \nAbstract: \nThe Asia Pacific region has been playing an essential role in global economic growth. Among other factors\, financial development\, accounting 37 percent of global banking profit\, has played a crucial role in this economic growth. Also\, in supporting this economic growth\, energy consumption from the region accounted for more than half of global energy demand in 2016. While the nexuses between finance–growth and between energy–growth have been widely conducted\, the inter–relationship between financial development and energy consumption appears to be underexamined in current empirical analyses\, in particular for the Asia Pacific region. This study aims to examine the long–term impact of financial development on energy consumption and their Granger causality based on the sample of 21 Asia Pacific countries during the 1990–2019 period. The long–run estimator –the fully modified ordinary least squares\, is utilized in this paper. Various indicators are used as the proxies for financial development to ensure the robustness of the findings. We find significant evidence on the positive long–run effect of financial development on energy consumption. In addition\, a bi–directional Granger causality between financial development and energy consumption is found. Various policy implications have emerged based on the empirical findings of this paper. \nKeywords: CAPM\, multi factor asset pricing models\, utilities\, ASEAN 5\, quantile regression\, Risk–Return framework. \n \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP24 - Trần Thị Thuận Trinh
DESCRIPTION:Bank efficiency in vietnam under the influence of merge and acquisition between 2010 and 2020 \nStudent: Trần Thị Thuận Trinh\, VNP24 \nSupervisor: Dr. Hồ Quốc Thông \nAbstract: \nMerge and acquisition are a consequence of economic growth overtime. It may be due to competition\, the growth of foreign direct and indirect investment flows as well as the proactive integration with the economy. It is observable that when the economy experiences significant variation of growth\, M&A appears to be more active. However\, there is heterogeneity of bank performance due to M&A.\nThe main objective of this study is to analyze factors that affect the performance of commercial banks in Vietnam pre and post M&A from 2010 to 2020. The study uses balanced panel data of all 27 commercial banks in Vietnam over 11 years between 2010 and 2020. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique and Pooled Ordinary Least Squared were employed to calculate the technical efficiency of commercial banks and analyze the variation of efficiency level. The main finding is that there exists room for banks to improve their performance. As well\, M&A is an important efficiency determinant. The study also suggested several solutions to possibly improve the performance of commercial banks in Vietnam. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Using Online Prices for Inflation Estimation and Pricing Behaviour Research: A Case Study from Vietnamese Multi-channel Retailers during the COVID-19 Pandemic \nStudent: Ngô Quỳnh Hoa\, VNP 26 \nSupervisor: Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Trọng Hoài & Dr. Matthias Rieger \nAbstract: \nThis thesis examines the potential of using online pricing data from multi-channel retailers for economic research during the pandemic time. It describes the method of collecting data through web-scraping techniques in two of the largest retailers in Vietnam during its first “true” wave of COVID-19 in 2021 and discusses the benefits and challenges of this approach. Data were collected daily across 167 days and from 2\,398 product items\, for a total of 396\,335 observations. Despite limitations such as the short time frame of the research and the fluctuations in the number of data points gathered during the lock-down\, the thesis shows that the online price index is capable of tracking the inflation dynamics during the pandemic. The approach can be helpful when price data cannot be collected in person due to lockdowns. Regressions of price dynamics on pandemic variables indicate that the pandemic trajectory\, including the total number of vaccinations and the lockdown measures\, correlates strongly with the discounting benefits consumers can enjoy\, particularly on essential products like foods. Still\, no evidence for the correlation between pandemic variables and inflation has been found within the scope of this research.\nJEL codes: D12; D22; D40; D50; D80\nKeywords: Inflation; online price index; e-commerce; multi-channel retailers; pricing behavior; pan-demic; Vietnam. \n \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP26 - Nguyễn Hà Đăng Khoa
DESCRIPTION:Does the student’ major choice for higher education matter their early career’s earning? Evidence from Vietnam \nStudent: Nguyễn Hà Đăng Khoa\, VNP 26 \nSupervisor: Dr. Trương Đăng Thụy \nAbstract: \nThis thesis investigates the effect of major choice on students’ earnings after they have graduated. Using Data from the Labor Force Survey 2019\, we focus on young graduates who are from 21 to 33 years old. The study applied the Heckman sample selection model which corrects the bias of “omitted variables” for the unobserved factors. The model estimates the earnings equation and explains the decision to participate into the labor market of individuals. Results from the observed earnings equation show that graduates who study in Biology\, Agriculture\, Law and Education see their earnings after school less than their Engineer & Technology major base group by 8\,1%\, 12\,4%\, 12\,1% and 6\,2%. On the other hand\, young graduates in Defense & Security and Creative art & Design gain higher earnings than the base group at 16\,5% and 7\,0%\, respectively. \nKeywords: Wage\, Heckman selection model\nJEL: J31\, C24 \n \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP26 - Nguyễn Lê Hồng Loan
DESCRIPTION:Factors affecting employees’ job duration and their decision to quit job in Ho Chi Minh City\, Vietnam \nStudent: Nguyễn Lê Hồng Loan\, VNP 26 \nSupervisor: Dr. Trương Đăng Thụy & Dr. Matthias Rieger \nAbstract: \nCurrent employee turnover surveys focus on predicting turnover by measuring demographics\, work environment\, organizational commitment\, and alternative job opportunities. The analytical technique commonly used in these studies is logistic regression that does not incorporate time as a variable of interest. Therefore\, this paper uses a survival analysis technique with a time variable to test the turnover model with a sample of 312 employees from various industries in Ho Chi Minh City. The estimates of the survival function and the risk indicate that with the increase in time\, the likelihood of staying with the company decreases sharply in the short term\, but after a particular time\, the risk of leaving the job disappears. The analytical method is selected through hypothesis evaluation of Cox PH model\, distribution model test. The test shows that the parametric method with exponential distribution provides a rational analysis for the turnover model. In particular\, factors such as the number of dependents\, years of experience\, management interest\, salary\, and emerging job replacement opportunities help predict turnover while happiness at work is significantly not. The results from the parametric model regression are consistent with previous studies on working environment factors\, organizational commitment\, and alternative job opportunities that have a strong influence on employee turnover. The implication of these findings is to help organizations plan and implement employee retention policies that are appropriate over time. \nKeywords: Labour economics\, Human behaviours\, Job satisfaction\, Voluntary turnover\, Alternative job opportunity\, Human resources development\, Job duration\, Survival model. \nJEL codes: E24; J21; J63; M51 \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP24 - Lê Thị Vân Anh
DESCRIPTION:Employee’s decision to quit: A case study at Cho Ray Hospital \nStudent: Lê Thị Vân Anh\, VNP 24 \nSupervisor: Dr. Trương Đăng Thụy \nAbstract: \nThis study conducted a survey of employees of Cho Ray Hospital in 2020 to examing the determinants of job quit. Two decision variables are examined\, including employees’ plan to quit in the next 12 months\, and the decision to accept a hypothetical offer with salary levels higher than their current salary. Several independent variables were used to examine the decision to quit\, including job characteristics\, working conditions\, employees’ family circumstances\, and individual characteristics. A logistic regression is applied for both dependent variables. The analyses indicates some important findings and policy implications. \nThe first important finding is that salary at Cho Ray Hospital is not a key driver of job quit. In all models\, increase in the current salary does not result in higher probability of job quit. This implies that increase in current salary at Cho Ray Hospital may improve the living standard of their staffs\, but this should not be the key policy to prevent job quit. Second\, job satisfaction is the key factor that affect employees’ decision to quit. The analysis reveals that the probability of job quit is quite high for the group of employees who have low level of job satisfaction\, while this probability is quite low for those who have high job satisfaction. This implies that improving job satisfaction should be the key policy in preventing job quit. Finally\, employees with more dependands have higher probabilities of job quit\, probably because of the pressure of earning their living. This helps Cho Ray Hospital identify the group of employees who have high potential of quitting their job. \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP26 - Nguyễn Phú Quốc
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence and unemployment: An international evidence \nStudent: Nguyễn Phú Quốc\, VNP 26 \nSupervisor: Dr. Võ Hồng Đức \nAbstract: \nThe term artificial intelligence (AI) was first defined in 1956 by John McCarthy as “a machine that behaves in ways that would be called intelligent if a human were so behaving” or “the science and engineering of creating intelligent machines”. The initial study and its modest achievements of AI with mere pre-programmed performances remained far beyond human intellectual abilities\, though the discipline functioned as a very foundation for further development in the field. \nNowadays\, modern information technologies and the advent of cognitive machines powered by AI have powerfully transformed people’s life and work. While AI can amplify productivity in some industries\, there are instances where they can take over human work and revolutionize occupations to some degree. This paper scrutinizes the possible influence of AI on unemployment using a broad database of AI-related patents in 40 developed and emerging markets from 2000 to 2019. The study employs a panel smooth transition regression (PSTR) model to analyze the relationship between AI and unemployment under various inflation levels. The study contributes to the existing literature with several findings. First\, findings from our analysis confirm the non-linear relationship between AI\nand unemployment depending on the threshold of inflation. In general\, AI increases unemployment until a certain threshold of inflation is attained\, then the disclosed ascendancy reduces its effect afterwards. Second\, the smooth mechanism employed in this analysis can capture individual estimates varying among countries over time. Finally\, this pioneering research extends the literature coverage to provide evidence on both developed and emerging economies. \nKeywords: Artificial intelligence (AI)\, patents\, unemployment rate\, panel smooth threshold regression (PSTR)

DESCRIPTION:Willingness to pay for renewable energy: A case study in HCMC\, Vietnam \nStudent: Nguyễn Thị Thúy Ngân\, VNP 26 \nSupervisor: Dr. Trương Đăng Thụy \nAbstract: \nThis research estimates willingness to pay for renewable energy and examines its determinants by using the Discrete Choice Experiment. The data was collected in 2020 from 286 households with electricity connections in Ho Chi Minh City\, Vietnam. In addition to Conditional Logit as the standard model\, Mixed Logit and Latent Class are applied in this study to fix its limitations. Several outstanding findings are presented as follows. Firstly\, an explicit linear relationship is found between the value of WTP and the increase in RE share. Secondly\, similar to previous literature\, solar energy is the most preferred RE source; however\, the WTP for RE generated from biomass exceeds that from wind\, although knowledge of wind energy is more popular than biomass through statistics\, implying a huge potential for development of biomass energy projects. Furthermore\, two different latent classes are identified\, including awareness of wind and biomass energy\, home ownership\, the number of people at home during the day and the total times of outage. Noticeably\, there is no relationship between the WTP for clean energy and income\nfound in this study\, while almost all research found a positive correlation. The estimated results show comparative similarities in all three models\, indicating the high reliability of research results. \nKeywords: renewable energy resources\, willingness to pay\, choice experiment method\, conditional logit model\, mixed logit model\, latent class analysis \nJEL classification: O13; P28 ; Q42.

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP24 - Võ Thành Luân
DESCRIPTION:The impact of currency devaluation on macroeconomic indicators \nStudent: Võ Thành Luân\, VNP 24 \nSupervisor: Dr. Võ Hồng Đức \nAbstract: \nThis dissertation examines the impact of currency devaluation on major macroeconomic indicators including real effective exchange rate\, trade balance\, inflation\, foreign direct investment inflows\, and gross domestic product. The study aims to answer the central question\, “How is each macroeconomic indicator impacted when a country devaluates its currency?” \nThe sample of nine emerging Asian countries\, including India\, Indonesia\, Jordan\, Korea\, Malaysia\, Pakistan\, the Philippines\, Thailand\, and Vietnam is used. The annual time series data were collected over a period from 1996 to 2019. This study uses the panel vector autoregression (PVAR) approach within a generalized method of moments (GMM) framework to investigate the relationship between these macroeconomic indicators dynamically using the impulse response functions and variance decomposition. \nOur empirical findings suggest that currency devaluation will boost the trade balance while also improves output growth. However\, the negative consequence is that currency devaluation will result in an increase in inflation. The results also reveal that the currency devaluation is the most important element in explaining inflation fluctuations. In addition\, the positive impact of currency devaluation on attracting foreign direct investment is found. Moreover\, findings confirm that macroeconomic factors such as the balance of trade\, FDI inflows and consumer price index explain significantly the change in exchange rate. \nOn the ground of these empirical findings\, policy implications have emerged. As a result\, we consider that it is necessary to put the exchange rate in the context of the interplay with other macroeconomic indicators in order to manage the exchange rate. We recommend that it is necessary to pursue the objectives of stabilizing the exchange rate and controlling inflation. These objectives should be taken into consideration in order to improve the purchasing power of the currency in contrast to other foreign currencies. \nKeywords: Currency Devaluation\, Macroeconomic indicators\, Emerging Asian\, Panel VAR\, GMM-System\, Impulse Response Functions\, Variance Decomposition.

DESCRIPTION:Does the EU poverty indicator for 2020 Target disadvantage the elderly population? \nStudent: Vương Ngọc Vy Vân\, VNP 23 \nSupervisor: Dr. Võ Tất Thắng \nAbstract: \nThe EU has used the AROPE – at risk of poverty or social exclusion as the key indicator in the last decade to montior their poverty and social inclusion progress against the Europe 2020 Strategy. As the strategy’s period recently ends\, the poverty reduction target is likely to be the only unachievable one. This paper analyses the AROPE to examine the\nhypothesis of medical expense exclusion in the poverty calculation leading to the elderly poverty underestiment. This incidence\, in turn\, can cause the policy’s lack of attention to older people\, so contributing to the objective failure. Data were derived from Eurostat and the SHARE – Survey of Health\, Ageing and Retirement in Europe Wave 7. Although healthcare cost is proved to correlate to the poverty\, it is not considered as a key factor in AROPE composition. By addressing the impoverishment effect of healthcare out-of-pocket payment on the elderly headcount poverty ratios in 12 countries\, the study shows that the higher the poverty bar is lifted from 5-10-20 euros per day\, the more severe the impact is. Together\, this research provide an untapped viewpoint for the Europe 2020 final\nassessment later\, to consider healthcare costs in the poverty indicator. \nJEL Classification: J14\, I15\, N34\nKeywords: elderly poverty\, healthcare out-of-pocket payment\, impoverishment effect\, Lorenz-curve regression

DESCRIPTION:The impacts of budget policy on economic growth of cities and provinces of the Mekong River Delta\n(2005-2018) \nStudent: Nguyễn Võ Hoàng\, VNP 24 \nSupervisor: Dr. Trương Đăng Thụy \nAbstract: \nWe conduct this study in order to evaluate the impact of budget policy on Vietnamese economic growth. However\, due to the limit of time\, this paper limits the scope of the study to the 13 Mekong Delta provinces from the period 2005 to 2018. \nAccording to the definition of capital expenditure\, we believe that if the proportion of State expenditure is highly concentrated on capital expenditure would cause positive impacts on economic growth. Hence\, the first goal of our study is to test whether or not the higher share of local government capital expenditure cause a positive impacts on economic growth of cities and provinces of the Mekong River Delta. Secondly\, we also test if the higher share of local government own source revenue cause a positive impacts on economic growth of cities and provinces of the Mekong River Delta. However\, in Vietnam\, the index of the size of local revenue is not considered a good indicator of decentralization. Nowadays\, local revenue has always been imposed by the Central government; therefore\, it does not reflect correctly the local autonomy. Therefore\, in this study we are more interested in the allocation of local government’s budget on capital expenditure to analyze the effect of capital expenditure on economic growth.

The data of 111 listed firms on HOSE from 2010 to 2019 was collected. By using OLS\, FEM\, REM\, the study concluded agency theory could explain the relationship between corporate governance and diversification in case of Vietnam. The relationship between CEO’s ownership or board size and diversification was not significant\, while the duality in position of CEO\, board independence and blockholder had negative impact on the degree of diversification. This study also contributed some practical results in Vietnam market that the most diversified companies will significantly increase the firm value by taking advantage of corporate governance. \nKeywords: Corporate governance\, diversification\, firm performance. \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 Trương Hoàng Yến
DESCRIPTION:Trade liberalization and food security: A new approach with global food security index \nStudent: Trương Hoàng Yến\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Phạm Thị Bích Ngọc \nAbstract: \nFree trade has been still a controversial issue in policies aimed at improving the well-being of nations\, of which the fundamental demand is food security. This study estimates the impact of trade liberalization on food security\, measured by the global food security index (GFSI)\, for 109 countries in a panel framework over the period 2012–2018 determined by data availability. The main contribution to the existing literature is a causal impact at an overall level of food security instead of each of its dimensions. The system GMM estimator was employed to account for unobserved heterogeneity and potential endogeneity of the explanatory variables. The result indicated that trade openness had a positive and statistically significant effect on GFSI. In particular\, one unit change in trade openness was associated with an average of 0.13 unit increase in the overall GFSI in the long run. The food security’s composite indicator was also positively affected by cereal area harvested and level of economic development. While FDI net inflows\, rural population\, armed conflict\, and inflation drove a reduction in the GFSI. Landlocked countries were found to be less food-secure than others. Moreover\, sensitivity analysis of alternative measures of openness further lent support to the idea that both trade volume and open policy environment positively impacted food security.

DESCRIPTION:Corporate bond market boom and its implication: Empirical evidence real estate firm Vietnamese \nStudent: Nguyễn Thị Thùy Trang\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Vũ Việt Quảng \nAbstract: \nThis study tries to examine the direct impact of “corporate bond market boom”(bond boom) on firm performance of sixty listed real estate company on both HOSE and HNX in the 2015-2019 period. Bond issuance is an effective capital mobilization channel in the context of tightened credit by the State Bank in the real estate sector since 2018. However\, the massive and uncontrolled bond issuance in recent years can bring negative effects on firm performance of real estate companies in particular and the whole economy in general. Economic experts are also concerned that\, if this situation lasts too long\, the consequences for the following years will be very serious. However\, whether the “corporatebond market boom” actually affects the real estate firms performance will be clarified in this research paper. Several descriptive statistic results depict that the relationship of massive bond issuance and firm performance (measured by ROE\, ROA) is negative\, but with TobinQ is not statistically significant. Differences in differences model with fixed effect technique is used to estimatethis relationship. Similar to the findings of previous empirical studies\, the regression results of this researchillustrate the direct pessimistic impact of “corporatebond market boom” on firm performance over the post-2018 period. \nKeywords: “corporate bond market boom” \, firm performance\, differences in differences. \n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:The effect of exchange rate volatility on the exports of Southeast Asian countries to North America countries for period 2000-2018 \nStudent: Kiều Công Bằng\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Trọng Hoài \nAbstract: \nThis study estimates the impact of real exchange rate volatility on the exports of ten Southeast Asian Countries to three North American countries for the period 2000-2018. With the trend of regional integration and expanding trade cooperation\, these ASEAN countries have an export volume which having been creased continuously to the Northern American countries such as the US\, Canada\, Mexico which belong to NAFTA in recent years. This research uses three measures in static and dynamic panel model for estimating the relationship between real exchange rate volatility and export of ten ASEAN countries to three Northern American countries over period 2000:M1 to 2018:M12 which is fixed effect\, random effect\, System generalized method of moments (S-GMM). Further\, determining real exchange rate volatility in this paper focus on three methods\, which are Absolute of real exchange rate\, Moving average standard deviation (MASD)\, Generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity GARCH(1\,1). It is illustrated that this study finds out that the exchange rate volatility has a significant negative impact to export in ten Southeast Asian Countries to 3 North American countries when it is determined by absolute\, MASD methods\, and has opposite results when it is calculated by GARCH(1\,1) methods. Besides\, the Term of trade has an inverse effect on ten ASEAN’s export. \nJEL Classification: G28\, I25 \nKeywords: Exchange rate volatility\, Exports\, ASEAN countries\, Northern American countries\, Panel data set \n \n

DESCRIPTION:The impact of international financial intergation on economic growth \nStudent: Dương Thị Ngọc Quỳnh\, VNP 23 \nSupervisor: Dr. Nguyễn Vũ Hồng Thái \nAbstract: \nIn recent decades\, international financial integration seems to have been more interested by policy makers as well as academic researchers because countries can reap its benefit when satisfying some definite conditions. However\, the pioneering researchers have encountered many difficulties in quantifying the IFI variable. And there have been mixed opinions in empirical studies to assess the correlation between IFI and economic growth. This research paper contributes to the empirical literature that investigate the relationship between international financial integration and economic growth by using a cross-national and panel dataset of encompassing 178 countries over the period 1996-2015 relying on the estimation methods of OLS\, 2SLS\, OLS with Fixed Effects\, and GMM. This research result reveals the beneficial impacts of international financial integration on economic growth are likely to be too small to be distinguished from zero\, given existing data in spite of IFI is being in negative association with growth rate in statistically significance. \nKeywords: International Financial Integration\, Economic Growth\, Cross-national Regression\, Panel Regression. \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 Khương Lan Uyên
DESCRIPTION:Determinants of foreign direct investment in environmental relevant sectors: The case of OECD countries \nStudent: Khương Lan Uyên\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Prof. Dr. Peter A.G. van Bergeijk & Dr. Nguyễn Hoàng Bảo \nAbstract: \nAlmost all nations are trying to promote economic growth as well as narrowing inequality gap. However\, they are required to concern about climate change goal which are commonly agreed by international community under Paris Agreement. There are numerous researches about total FDI or FDI in general\, however\, green or low carbon FDI seem to be ignored. Studying about green or low-carbon FDI is an attempt to combine economic growth and climate change goal. According to World investment report (UNCTAD\, 2020)\, investment in sustainable development has grown quickly in “number\, variety and size” and mainly flows in developed countries. Different studies have been conducted on determining determinants to attract FDI inflows as a whole or test impacts of FDI on environment and while the analysis\nof green FDI is rarely discussed. A panel sample\, which covers 31 OECD countries in the period of 2005 – 2018 is used for estimation. The research aims to study the effectiveness of GDP\, environmental taxes\, feed-in tariffs and government spending on R&D for energy\nefficiency on inward green FDI stock through basic panel analysis. This paper applies basic descriptive statistics and panel data regression models\, such as Pooled OLS\, Fixed Effect\, Random effect and then uses BP test and Hausman test to choose the best estimation models. Results show that economic activities and environmental policies play crucial role in defining green FDI in OECD nations. All of these are proved to be correlated with higher attraction of FDI.

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 Trịnh Quốc Minh
DESCRIPTION:Financial development and energy consumption: Which causes which in the Asia Pacific region? \nStudent: Trịnh Quốc Minh\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Võ Hồng Đức \nAbstract: \nThe Asia Pacific region has been playing an essential role in global economic growth.Among other factors\, financial development\, accounting 37 percent of global banking profit\, has played a crucial role in this economic growth. Also\, in supporting this economic growth\, energy consumption from the region accounted for more than half of global energy demand in 2016. While the nexuses between finance-growth and between energy-growth have been widely conducted\, the inter-relationship between financial development and energy consumption appears to be underexamined in current empirical analyses\, in particular for the Asia Pacific region. This study aims to examine the long-term impact of financial development on energy consumption and their Granger causality based on the sample of 21 Asia Pacific countries during the 1990-2019 period. The long-run estimator – the fully modified ordinary least squares\, is utilized in this paper. Various indicators are used as the proxies for financial development to ensure the robustness of the findings. We find significant evidence on the positive long-run effect of financial development on energy consumption. In addition\, a bi-directional Granger causality between financial development and energy consumption is found. Various policy implications have emerged based on the empirical findings of this paper. \nKeywords: CAPM\, multi factor asset pricing models\, utilities\, ASEAN 5\, quantile regression\, Risk-Return framework \n

DESCRIPTION:How does entrepreneurship impacts unemployment?\nStudent: Nguyễn Thị Anh Thư\, VNP 23 \nSupervisor: Dr. Phạm Đình Long \nAbstract: \nThe study investigates how entrepreneurship impacts the unemployment. Since there are the ambiguities found in this relationship through not just theory but the empirical studies\, the purpose of this study demonstrates this relationship by an equation vector autoregression model on two variable self-employment\, a common measure of entrepreneurship\, and the unemployment rate for data from 44 low-middle level income countries from 1992 to 2017. We find out that there is the negative relationship of self-employment associate to unemployment – refer to the “Schumpeter” effect. This conclusion reinforces previous arguments and clarifies the relationship of the entrepreneurship effect on unemployment; therefore the policymakers could review the law which support entrepreneurship activities to improve unemployment rates and the growth of economic.

DESCRIPTION:A cost-effectiveness analysis of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) for the antiepileptic drugs (AEDS)\nStudent: Lê Thị Mỹ Linh\, VNP 23 \nSupervisor: Dr. Võ Tất Thắng \nAbstract: \nThe thesis is focus on the evaluation whether therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) for ADEs more benefits than the current practice. The therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) for 1st ADEs is not the routine practice at Vietnam. One real case is Nhan Dan Gia Dinh Hospital\, one of the public hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City\, which has the 1st AEDs generation are used to treating as the first choice for patients. Due to it was cheap and fully covered by healthcare insurance. The research methodology for this thesis is designed the prospective randomized study. Descriptive statistics results provided some background information of these studied patients. We had 96 patients met the eligibility criteria to be randomized in two groups. All of them were treated at Nhan Dan Gia Dinh Hospital at time this study conducted (to December 2019) for symptom epilepsy including post-stroke seizures or post-stroke epilepsy. The maximum number of medications to be indicated for epilepsy are four. All of them live in Ho Chi Minh city and willing to self-pay 200\,000 dong for the TDM test at randomized stage. The baseline therapy for patients was the 1st generation such as Valproic acid was used the most by patients (66 patients)\, followed by Carbamazepin (37 patients) and Phenytoin (15 patients). Only nine patients (9.36%) was indicated the drug of 2nd generation as the single treatment approach. The remaining part (90.64%) was initiated with the 1st generation and was combined with the 2nd generation after that. The comparison of the burden disease is measured by the cost of two cohorts as the primary outcome. The patient of test-group trended using more the outpatient insurance for medication than the non-test-group patients. And when calculating the ICEA of the cost with the number of seizures showed the cost effectiveness.

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 Lê Thị Ánh Mai
DESCRIPTION:Impacts of long working hours on the mental health of European above the age of 50 \nStudent: Lê Thị Ánh Mai\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Matthias Rieger & Dr. Võ Tất Thắng \nAbstract: \nUsing data from three waves of the Survey of Health\, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE)\, this study is one of the first to examine the effects of long working hours on the depression symptoms for a population aged over 50 years in 11 European countries. Fixed effects regressions and an instrumental variable approach are applied to overcome the problem of reverse causality between working time and mental health. The estimations give evidence of positive effects of work on the mental health outcome while confirms the adverse impact of working longer than the European regulatory recommendation\, which is a 48-hours weekly limit. In an attempt of applying a regression kink design\, the study also finds a gradual negative effect of retirement on the old-age depression. Policy implications include better legislation on the statutory working hours for the old age\, as well as support on bridge employment or society-contributing activities for this specific group. \nKeywords: Long working hours\, mental health\, aged population\, Europe\, SHARE\, EURO-D depression scale\, panel data\, fixed effects\, instrumental variables\, regression kink design\nJEL classification: C33\, C36\, J22\, J26\, J88\, O52 \n

DESCRIPTION:Financial inclusion and poverty reduction in Asean from 2014 to 2018 \nStudent: Phạm Thị Ngọc Mai\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Prof.Dr. Nguyễn Trọng Hoài \nAbstract: \nUnderstanding financial inclusion in Asean may help reduce poverty as well as foster economic growth. The aim of this research is to investigate the impact of financial inclusion on poverty in the region during the period 2004-2018. The paper finds that access to the banking system could reduce poverty in Asean. Both Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) techniques are used to examine the relationship. The results show that the outreach of ATMs could help reduce poverty rate. The impacts of outreach of the bank branches on poverty appeared endogeneity problem. This means that the demand for banking services increases when poverty reduction\, and poverty reduction with economic growth generates pression on policy to enhance financial inclusion. The results of paper also reflect the improvement of education plays an important role to enhance financial inclusion and alleviates poverty rate\, perhaps because both the demand side and the supply side of banking system are require knowledge about financial services. As for trade openness\, the paper shows trade openness associate with poverty rate\, so policy makers have to carefully consider the state of the economy to have strategy that help their countries achieve optimal benefits rather than lose in competition with foreign countries. \nKey words: ASEAN\, financial devlopment\, financial inclusion\, poverty\, access \nJEL: G00\, O11\, O16\, N2

DESCRIPTION:The impact of digital marketing on profit of Eco Lian company during Covid-19 context: An approach using difference in differences \nStudent: Trần Thị Kim Chi\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Prof.Dr. Nguyễn Trọng Hoài \nAbstract: \nDigital Marketing performance measurement is important in Eco Lian Company\, it is critical for the operational planning and adjustment of marketing strategies and tactics over time. Approach in this scenario is to study the relationship between quantity of inquiry come from Digital Marketing and profit at Eco Lian Company. This study presents a casual inference methodology – “Difference in Differences (DID) on the application of Digital marketing campaign measurement. Instead of building direct relationship between inquiry and profit\, I attempt to create empirical research and study the differential effect on a ‘treatment group’ versus a ‘control group’. This study collects data from Eco Lian Company. The data covers 8 months within Covid-19 context\, which ranges from January to August 2020. The data are collected from various sources\, such as partner channels\, social networks\, websites. In order to assess the performance of the Digital Marketing campaign in Eco Lian Company. In this study\, I realize that my company truly benefits from Digital Marketing such as search engine marketing (SEM)\, search engine optimization (SEO)\, content marketing\, remarketing\, and promoting partner channels. We determine which channels are effective and which product lines are of interest after using a digital marketing campaign. \nJEL Classification: C1\, C12\, M13\, M31\, M39\, M15\nKeywords: Digital Marketing\, Online Marketing\, Social network\, Search Engine Optimization–SEO \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 Lưu Bích Thu
DESCRIPTION:The impact of climate change on Vietnamese cropland: Ricardian approach\nStudent: Lưu Bích Thu\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Trương Đăng Thụy \nAbstract: \nThis paper uses data of temperature and precipitation to analyze the impact of climate change on the net revenue of farming households in Vietnam. For this research objective\, this study applies the Ricardian cross-sectional approach in which net revenue is regressed on climatic variables\, water flow\, soil types\, and economic variables\, and regional dummies. From the Ricardian regression results\, the study calculates the marginal effects of temperature and rainfall of the dry season and wet season. The results indicate that these variables have a significant effect on the net crop revenue per hectare of farmers under Vietnam conditions. Particularly\, lower precipitation and higher temperature result in loss of the net farm revenue per hectare in the dry season. I also found that the relationship between household net revenue and weather variables are nonlinear. Net revenue has a hill-shaped relationship with temperature in the dry season. This is explained that if the dry temperature is warmer\, net revenue will increase\, but dry temperatures can increase up to a point where further temperature increases will damage the crop. Additionally\, the study demonstrates the change of net revenue impact of predicted climate scenarios for the years 2050 and 2100. These scenarios predicted changes in climate in each district in Vietnam over time (MONRE). Net revenue projected\nto decline about 5 million VND/ha and 3.7 million VND/ha due to increasing temperature and changing precipitation in 2050 and 2100\, respectively. \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 Hoàng Ngọc Đạt
DESCRIPTION:Determinants of FDI in Vietnam: An application of the gravity model\nStudent: Hoàng Ngọc Đạt\, VNP 24 \nSupervisor: Dr. Nguyễn Quỳnh Huy \nAbstract: \nFor developing countries\, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has been identified as an important source of capital\, contributing remarkably to economic growth\, technological transfer\, and poverty reduction. Consequently\, the subject is of intense interests to both economists and policy makers. Many studies have been conducted to analyse the determinants of FDI and its impacts on different aspects of the economy and solutions to increase desirable FDI projects. This research aims to expand the literature by applying an augmented gravity model to investigate factors pulling FDI towards Vietnam over the period from 2008 to 2019\, focusing on the top 10 foreign investors in Vietnam\, understanding the extent of the impacts of FDI and proposing policies that make Vietnam more appealing to foreign investors. The research finds out that the gravity variables as proxies by GDP per capita and distance from source countries to Vietnam have expected impacts as indicated in existing literature and are statistically important in the prediction of FDI inflows. Additionally\, other important factors worth mentioning include institutions and ease of doing business\, trade openness\, infrastructure\, inflation rate and exchange rate. Based on the findings\, policies are suggested to help attract more FDI projects to Vietnam in the future. \n
