SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP24 - Lê Thị Vân Anh
DESCRIPTION:Employee’s decision to quit: A case study at Cho Ray Hospital \nStudent: Lê Thị Vân Anh\, VNP 24 \nSupervisor: Dr. Trương Đăng Thụy \nAbstract: \nThis study conducted a survey of employees of Cho Ray Hospital in 2020 to examing the determinants of job quit. Two decision variables are examined\, including employees’ plan to quit in the next 12 months\, and the decision to accept a hypothetical offer with salary levels higher  than their current salary. Several independent variables were used to examine the decision to quit\, including job characteristics\, working conditions\, employees’ family circumstances\, and individual characteristics. A logistic regression is applied for both dependent variables. The analyses indicates some important findings and policy implications. \nThe first important finding is that salary at Cho Ray Hospital is not a key driver of job quit. In all models\, increase in the current salary does not result in higher probability of job quit. This implies that increase in current salary at Cho Ray Hospital may improve the living standard of their staffs\, but this should not be the key policy to prevent job quit. Second\, job satisfaction is the key factor that affect employees’ decision to quit. The analysis reveals that the probability of job quit is quite high for the group of employees who have low level of job satisfaction\, while this probability is quite low for those who have high job satisfaction. This implies that improving job satisfaction should be the key policy in preventing job quit. Finally\, employees with more dependands have higher probabilities of job quit\, probably because of the pressure of earning their living. This helps Cho Ray Hospital identify the group of employees who have high potential of quitting their job. \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP26 - Nguyễn Lê Hồng Loan
DESCRIPTION:Factors affecting employees’ job duration and their decision to quit job in Ho Chi Minh City\, Vietnam \nStudent: Nguyễn Lê Hồng Loan\, VNP 26 \nSupervisor: Dr. Trương Đăng Thụy & Dr. Matthias Rieger \nAbstract: \nCurrent employee turnover surveys focus on predicting turnover by measuring demographics\, work environment\, organizational commitment\, and alternative job opportunities. The analytical technique commonly used in these studies is logistic regression that does not incorporate time as a variable of interest. Therefore\, this paper uses a survival analysis technique with a time variable to test the turnover model with a sample of 312 employees from various industries in Ho Chi Minh City. The estimates of the survival function and the risk indicate that with the increase in time\, the likelihood of staying with the company decreases sharply in the short term\, but after a particular time\, the risk of leaving the job disappears. The analytical method is selected through hypothesis evaluation of Cox PH model\, distribution model test. The test shows that the parametric method with exponential distribution provides a rational analysis for the turnover model. In particular\, factors such as the number of dependents\, years of experience\, management interest\, salary\, and emerging job replacement opportunities help predict turnover while happiness at work is significantly not. The results from the parametric model regression are consistent with previous studies on working environment factors\, organizational commitment\, and alternative job opportunities that have a strong influence on employee turnover. The implication of these findings is to help organizations plan and implement employee retention policies that are appropriate over time. \nKeywords: Labour economics\, Human behaviours\, Job satisfaction\, Voluntary turnover\, Alternative job opportunity\, Human resources development\, Job duration\, Survival model. \nJEL codes: E24; J21; J63; M51 \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP26 - Nguyễn Hà Đăng Khoa
DESCRIPTION:Does the student’ major choice for higher education matter their early career’s earning? Evidence from Vietnam \nStudent: Nguyễn Hà Đăng Khoa\, VNP 26 \nSupervisor: Dr. Trương Đăng Thụy \nAbstract: \nThis thesis investigates the effect of major choice on students’ earnings after they have graduated. Using Data from the Labor Force Survey 2019\, we focus on young graduates who are from 21 to 33 years old. The study applied the Heckman sample selection model which corrects the bias of “omitted variables” for the unobserved factors. The model estimates the earnings equation and explains the decision to participate into the labor market of individuals. Results from the observed earnings equation show that graduates who study in Biology\, Agriculture\, Law and Education see their earnings after school less than their Engineer & Technology major base group by 8\,1%\, 12\,4%\, 12\,1% and 6\,2%. On the other hand\, young graduates in Defense & Security and Creative art & Design gain higher earnings than the base group at 16\,5% and 7\,0%\, respectively. \nKeywords: Wage\, Heckman selection model\nJEL: J31\, C24 \n  \n
