SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 - Trịnh Quốc Minh
DESCRIPTION:Financial development and energy consumption: Which causes which in the Asia Pacific region? \nStudent: Trịnh Quốc Minh\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Võ Hồng Đức \nAbstract: \nThe Asia Pacific region has been playing an essential role in global economic growth. Among other factors\, financial development\, accounting 37 percent of global banking profit\, has played a crucial role in this economic growth. Also\, in supporting this economic growth\, energy consumption from the region accounted for more than half of global energy demand in 2016. While the nexuses between finance–growth and between energy–growth have been widely conducted\, the inter–relationship between financial development and energy consumption appears to be underexamined in current empirical analyses\, in particular for the Asia Pacific region. This study aims to examine the long–term impact of financial development on energy consumption and their Granger causality based on the sample of 21 Asia Pacific countries during the 1990–2019 period. The long–run estimator –the fully modified ordinary least squares\, is utilized in this paper. Various indicators are used as the proxies for financial development to ensure the robustness of the findings. We find significant evidence on the positive long–run effect of financial development on energy consumption. In addition\, a bi–directional Granger causality between financial development and energy consumption is found. Various policy implications have emerged based on the empirical findings of this paper. \nKeywords: CAPM\, multi factor asset pricing models\, utilities\, ASEAN 5\, quantile regression\, Risk–Return framework. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 - Võ Phước Trí
DESCRIPTION:Tracking growth during the new wave of COVID-19 using Google Trends \nStudent: Võ Phước Trí\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Trần Thị Tuấn Anh \nAbstract: \nThe immediate impact of coronavirus requires the high-frequency data to adapt well to the variation of the macro-economy. Applying the Artificial Neural Network algorithm\, this thesis aims to construct a Weekly Tracker\, which is used for tracking the growth rate\, from the Google Trends dataset. Compared to the Autoregressive model\, this thesis shows that predictions from the Artificial Neural Network algorithm outperform in leading information of growth rate movement. The Weekly Tracker suggests that the recovery of 22 economies in the sample has been constrained during the new wave of Covid-19. The growth rate estimate may be still positive\, but the trend is horizontal\, even in developed countries. And with the Shapley value analysis\, this thesis finds out Consumption topics and categories\, especially trade and services\, are the variables that have a key role for the recovery; Economic Anxiety topics and categories are extremely popular during the coronavirus spread out\, especially in the beginning\, and have large negative contributions; number searches of Labor Market and Health Condition topics and categories also increase during the pandemic and they contribute positively to the Weekly Tracker. Focusing on Vietnam\, this thesis finds out the down trend of the Weekly Tracker during the social-distancing and locked down period in Ho Chi Minh City\, same as the movement of Consumption searches number. \nJEL Classification: O11\, C14\, C45 \nKeywords: growth rate\, pandemic time\, Covid-19 pandemic\, neural network\, machine learning\, Shapley values \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP26 - Đoàn Hồ Đan Tâm
DESCRIPTION:The impact of human development on corruption in Vietnamese provinces: A spatial econometrics analysis \nStudent: Đoàn Hồ Đan Tâm\, VNP26 \nSupervisor: Dr. Lê Thái Thường Quân \nAbstract: \nWhile there is long interest in the impact of corruption\, the research on determinants of corruption is still less\, especially the effect of human development on corruption. This research examines the impact of human development on corruption at the provincial level of 63 provinces in Vietnam for the period 2011–2020. Corruption is measured using two alternative indicators: The Control of Corruption from Provincial Governance Public Administration Performance Index (PAPI) and the Informal Charges from the Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI). Human development is measured using income per capita\, literacy ratio\, and training ratio. The spatial panel techniques are used to handle possible spatial dependencies with contiguity and distance–based weight matrices. The results show that income per capita has a strong effect on reducing corruption in the case of Control of Corruption; however\, it increases the corruption in the case of Informal Charge. Education\noverall has the effect of reducing corruption\, though small. Spatial effects are also confirmed for both indicators of corruption\, though with different specifications. This research contributes to the field of empirical study on determinants of corruption with up–to–date data for the context of Vietnam and using spatial econometrics approach for analysis. \nKeywords: Corruption\, Human Development\, Spatial Effect\, Vietnam \nJEL classification: D73\, C2\, O1 \n  \n  \n  \n
