SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 Mai Kiên Trung
DESCRIPTION:The export sophistication and economic growth: Evidence from cross-country and panel analyses \nStudent: Mai Kiên Trung\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Assoc.Prof.Dr. Phạm Đình Long \nAbstract: \nHausmann\, Hwang\, and Rodrik (2007) (HHR) argued that the export structure of a country has a vital role in economic development. They developed two indicators\, PRODY and EXPY\, that measure the income level of a good and country’s export basket\, respectively. The authors proved that higher EXPY would lead to faster subsequent economic growth. A majority of empirical papers have employed the widely used EXPY to draw their results\, but they refrain from discussing the features of the indicators. Huber (2017) paid his attention to the shortcomings of the indicator. In the present study\, the author considers three problems of HHR’s PRODY\, including the sample balancing\, the disaggregated level of goods\, and the calculation procedure. After that\, the resulting EXPY computed from the adjusted PRODY will be used to investigate the positive relationship between export sophistication and economic growth. The study uses the BACI dataset from CEPII that contains over 200 million disaggregated bilateral trade flows at HS 6-digits for over 200 countries from 1996 to 2018. The study confirms the main conclusion in HHR (2007)\, which claims that a country producing and exporting goods exported by rich countries tends to grow faster than a country specializes in other goods. Interestingly\, the present study finds that the magnitude of EXPY’s effect on growth is smaller than the one in HHR but more significant. The four 5-years sub-periods analysis estimated by the system-GMM method implies that a 10% increase in EXPY is associated with a 0.45 percentage point increase in growth rate.

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 Nguyễn Thiện Nhân
DESCRIPTION:The presence of global financial center and environmental degradation: Evidence from Asia-Pacific region. \nStudent: Nguyễn Thiện Nhân\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Nguyễn Hoài Bảo \nAbstract: \nThe world has observed the formation and advancement of metropolitan cities in the earliest twentieth century. The twenty-first century has witnessed a dramatical increase in the establishment of the global financial centre (GFC). London and New York claim the first and second major and largest centres in the world stage. Hongkong\, Singapore\, Shanghai\, Tokyo\, Sydney appear to be the main financial centres in the Asia-Pacific region. \nEstablishing a GFC appears to be an essential goal from emerging markets in the Asia-Pacific region to support economic growth. The establishment of such a centre requires a multifaceted approach in which theoretical and practical aspects are important to be considered. The well-designed and comprehensive analyses of identifying determinants for a GFC are very limited\, in particular for the Asia-Pacific region. As such\, this study is conducted to examine and identify the fundamental determinants leading to the establishment of a GFC in the Asia-Pacific region. We identify 14 determinants from the current literature. We then construct 16\,384 models to consider the relevance and importance of each of these 14 determinants in the context of the Asia-Pacific region. The Bayesian averaging of classical estimates (BACE) is used with a sample of 35 Asia-Pacific for the 2007-2017 period. Findings from our initial analyses indicate that emerging and developing countries in the region should focus on the following four fundamental determinants: the freedom to trade internationally; market size; higher education and training\, and the size of the government. \nWe then extend our analysis using a more robust set of criteria and additional quantitative technique which is known as the weighted average least square. The size of the government appears to be relatively less important\, in contrast\, the other three components\, including (i) freedom to trade internationally; (ii) market size; (iii) higher education and training\, are the robustly fundamental determinants for the Asia-Pacific region. \nEmerging markets in the Asia-Pacific region have been putting great effort to achieve the right balance between the benefits of economic growth and the costs of environmental degradation. Establishing the GFC is considered as an effective mechanism to support economic growth. However\, the benefits from a GFC should not be at the expense of quality of the environment in order to achieve the so-called sustainable economic development. As such\, this study is then extended by applying the concept of the Kuznets environmental curve into a relatively new aspect of financial development in the Asia-Pacific region. Other previous papers use either stock market capitalization to GDP or stock market total value-traded to GDP as a proxy for financial development. This study is unique and different from any other papers. The index of financial development is developed based on the fundamental determinants identified from this study. On the sample of 26 countries in the region over the 2007-2017 period\, the long-term effect of financial development to environmental degradation are considered using long-term estimators such as the panel fully modified ordinary least square (PFMOLS)\, and panel autoregressive distributed lag (PARDL)\, including the pooled mean group model (PMGARDL); the mean group (MGARDL); the dynamic fixed effect estimator (DFEARDL) and the Panel smooth transition regression (PSTR). The second-generation Hurlin and Dumitrescu (2012) test is used in determining Granger causality between financial development and environmental degradation. Findings from our paper confirm an inverted U-shaped relationship between financial development and environmental degradation in the Asia-Pacific region. Economic growth and energy consumption are also responsible for the deterioration of environmental quality in the Asia-Pacific region. We then claim that the concept of the Kuznets curve can be applied to the context of financial development. We also find a bidirectional relationship between financial development and environmental degradation. On the ground of findings from this study\, several policy implications are provided for the governments in the emerging markets in the Asia-Pacific region to consider. These important implications should be used to achieve the following two fundamental objectives. The first objective is to enhance and support national economic growth by establishing the global financial centre when desired. The second objective is to strike for the right balance between the benefits of financial development by establishing the GFC (to support economic growth) and the costs of environmental degradation. \nJEL: C11\, C33\, C34\, F38\, F64. \nKeywords: Bayesian model averaging\, IFC\, environmental quality\, financial development\, principle component analysis

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 Trần Bùi Thị Hồng Hạnh
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nThe impact of financial inclusion on income inequality. The case of Asean plus six\nStudent: Trần Bùi Thị Hồng Hạnh\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Prof.Dr. Nguyen Trọng Hoài \nAbstract: \nThis thesis aims to study the relationship between financial inclusion and income inequality in ASEAN Plus Six. Using data from Global Findex Database of World Bank in period 2004-2017\, OLS finds out that financial inclusion can reduce income inequality. However\, when concerning the characteristic of countries\, FE regression points out the positive relation between number of bank branches per 100\,000 adults and income inequality is stronger than negative relation between number of ATMs pe 100\,000 adults and income inequality. While using GMM to avoid endogenous problem\, result shows that financial inclusion has weak impact on income inequality.\nThis thesis finds out that the relationship between inclusive financial system and income distribution is different between developing countries and developed countries. In developing countries\, raise of financial inclusion can increase income inequality. While in developed countries\, financial inclusion development can reduce income inequality ‘’ \nThis paper provides some evidences to show that in developing countries\, improving in number of bank braches raises income share of highest income group\, and reduces income share of lowest income group. And level of financial inclusion of developing countries is quite lower than  developed countries. \n  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 Trần Anh Vũ
DESCRIPTION:Climate Change and The Global Coffee Industry: Factors That Promote Development in Coffee Production \nStudent: Trần Anh Vũ\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Hồ Quốc Thông \nAbstract: \nAgriculture is one of the industries that depend heavily on the climate. Due to various reasons\, climate changes lead to harmful phenomena\, such as pests\, drought\, floods\, affecting the agriculture sector. These phenomena not only cause destructive impacts on agriculture in general\, but also it has some environmentally sensitive influences on particular crops. Coffee is one of the significant contributors to many developing countries’ GDP\, such as Brazil\, Colombia\, Mexico\, Vietnam\, and Indonesia. \nPreviously\, existing studies focused on the impact of climatic factors – i.e.\, rainfall and temperature on coffee yield. Some examined both environmental factors and socio-economic factors affecting coffee production. These studies focus on the scope of research in certain areas\, whereas climate change happens across the globe \nFirstly\, this study focuses on the interaction between coffee production\, climatic\, economic\, environmental\, and geographic variables in the world’s six largest coffee producing and exporting countries. Multiple variables regression model is applied for evaluating the effects of these factors on coffee production in this case.. Data in the model is illustrated in panel data\, including climatic data (temperature\, precipitation)\, socio-economic variables\, environmental and geographic variables of six countries from 1991 to 2016\, which were collected from various secondary data sources. \nThe results achieved in this study are summarized as follows. The model shows that climatic variables such as temperature and precipitation are the essential climatic factors for coffee production as the results of previous studies indicate coffee’s sensitivity to seasonal temperature changes. The results show a significant effect of summer\, autumn\, winter temperatures on coffee production. In particular\, the impact of average temperature in summer/autumn on coffee production is a negative effect\, whereas the average temperature in winter has a positive relationship with coffee production. In terms of average rainfall\, the results show that the rainfall does not seem to affect significantly coffee production except for winter precipitation. Although\, in practice\, rainfall is extremely important for the growth of coffee trees. In addition\, some variables belonging to other groups of factors are also significant for coffee output. Specific results will be presented below. \nSecondly\, the research identifies the relationship of factors affecting the number of projects invested for development related to the coffee industry. Results from the Poisson model and Negative binominal model show that the factors: coffee harvested area\, coffee inventory\, CO2 emission\, GDP\, fertilizer price\, rural population are the factors that have significant impacts on the model. At the same time\, these factors positively impact the number of projects related to coffee. \nThirdly\, apply the multiplicative model to build prediction models for coffee production in Vietnam and Brazil based on historical data. The prediction model is based on a comparison of available observations and a predictive model of coffee yields in the two countries. The results of the Vietnamese model forecast are relatively good with deviations below 20%. \nFinally\, many solutions have been proposed to improve the coffee industry in the case of environmental climate changes\, fluctuation of socio-economic factors\, environmental and geographic elements. For example\, developing information systems helps the producers monitor and manage climate changes and farmers’ production costs. Other methods are proposed\, such as establishing a supply chain system to increase profits\, developing a coffee industry\, and building an effective commercial playground for this industry. Next\, the producing and exporting countries need to have reasonable development strategies and policies to stabilize the markets. Alternatively\, they can invest in research and development of efficient farm management services and systems. Besides that\, the government should consistently implement regulations and policies to create a compelling and fair working environment that focuses on protecting the environment. \n  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:The impact of Decree 100 on the drinking and drunk-driving behavior in Ho Chi Minh City\nStudent: Đặng Cửu Trinh\, VNP 24 \nSupervisor: Dr. Võ Tất Thắng \nAbstract: \nThe study aims to investigate the impact of the new BAC limits law on the frequency of drinking and drunk-driving in Ho Chi Minh City. The new level of BAC is the main content of the new decree\, called shortly Decree 100. The government issued Decree 100 with an expectation that it will reduce the negative behavior after alcohol drinking\, especially drunk-driving behavior. The study uses the difference-in-difference approach to estimate the primary data collected from the online survey. The study finds that Decree 100 positively impacts the monthly average number of driving after drinking. The significant magnitude of the effect varies from -0.623 to -0.642. These values imply that Decree 100 is associated with a 0.623 to 0.642 reduction in the monthly average number of drunk-driving. However\, the relationship between Decree 100 and the monthly average number of drinking is not statistically significant. \nKeyword: Decree 100\, BAC\, Drinking\, Drunk-Driving\, difference-in-difference.

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 Đặng Vũ Thanh
DESCRIPTION:Does the feedback effect from foreign investment to environmental regulation matter? \nStudent: Đặng Vũ Thanh\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Đức Võ \nAbstract: \nForeign investment and environmental regulations are generally considered a two-way relationship. The effect of environmental regulation to foreign investment has been intensively examined in previous empirical studies.  However\, the reverse relationship has largely been ignored. As such\, this study is conducted to examined the feedback effects from foreign investment on environmental regulations under the influence of host countries’ political institutions for 26 OECD countries during the period 1990-2015. The study makes contributions to the literature in three dimensions. First\, this is one of the few studies examining the reverse relationship in the Pollution haven hypothesis. Second\, we use OECD’s newly-developed environmental policy stringency index\, which is believed to be a more comprehensive measure for environmental regulations than previous ones. Third\, we investigate the long-run relationship between foreign investment and environmental regulation\, which has largely been neglected in the literature.  Empirical results from this study are consistent with the firm lobby model\, indicating that foreign investment does exert negative influence on environment policies because of the lobbying effect. However\, if the number of legislative units is large enough\, the lobbying effect is negated and the governments are likely to impose stricter pollution tax to maximize social welfare. Analyzing the sub-samples\, the effects do not translate to the upper-income countries\, where FDI is found to improve environmental regulations. Results for the lower-income countries are consistent with the full sample. \nKeyword: Foreign investment\, Environmental regulation\, Pollution haven hypothesis\, Institution\, OECD \n  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP25 Nguyễn Thế Hoàng
DESCRIPTION:The influence of technological innovation on labor force participation: Cross-country evidence \nStudent: Nguyễn Thế Hoàng\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Lê Văn Chơn \nAbstract: \nStructural and economic changes have led to the alteration in labor force participation (LFP) across the globe. This research pays attention to the role of technological innovation on labor force participation\, especially for both male (MLFP) and female (FLFP). The main objective is to investigate whether technological advancement can adjust LFP\, MLFP\, and FLFP. The study collects data from the World Bank during the period of 2000 – 2018\, including 197 countries around the world. The research applies two different econometric approaches\, static and dynamic respectively. The static approach does not take the lagged dependent variable into account\, while the dynamic one considers the lagged dependent variable. Out of the three techniques\, the most suitable one is Random Effect Model for the static approach. In the dynamic approach\, the paper uses the System GMM technique. The usage of different techniques can help check the robustness and consistency of all research models. Besides\, the study recommends that the government should advance technological innovation to encourage women to participate in the labor force. \nKeywords: technological innovation\, labor force participation\, R&D expenditure\, System GMM. \n

SUMMARY:Thesis Public Defense | VNP24 Đinh Việt Linh
DESCRIPTION:Retail loans and factors effecting profitability of Vietnamese listed banks\nStudent: Đinh Việt Linh\, VNP 24 \nSupervisor: Dr. Phạm Phú Quốc \nAbstract: \nThis study investigates the impact of retail lending section development in business structure and other determinants of profitability and on listed bank profitability between 2008 and 2018. \nThe findings provide several implications for policy-makers and bank managers. This suggests state-owned commercial banks should be approached by more customers with caution and attracted strategy. First\, the interest rate policy should be rational while continuously implementing it as a key competitive strategy. Second\, banks should manage credit risks\, liquidity risk\, and other risks effectively with regards to costs associated. In addition to the continuing effort to fully implementing BASEL II system\, banks should develop and manage an effective risk management strategy in a cost-effective way. Third\, commercial banks should pay more attention for R&D activities that incorporate more technology advancement into their lending and risk assessing process for retail customers. Finally\, commercial banks should diversify their market segments and services.

SUMMARY:[STBI-191018] The Role of Listing Price Strategies on the Probability of Sale for House: Evidence in Vietnam
DESCRIPTION:Dear researchers and students\,\nYou are cordially invited to the next STBI seminar.\n\nTopic: The Role of Listing Price Strategies on the Probability of Sale for House: Evidence in Vietnam \nPresenter: Nguyen Thi Bich Hong and Truong Thanh Hiep (UEH School of Economics) \nTime: 11:00 – Friday\, 18 October\, 2019 \nVenue: Room H.001\, Campus H\, UEH School of Economics\, 1A Hoang Dieu\, Phu Nhuan District\, Ho Chi Minh City \nLanguage: Vietnamese \nAbstract: The aim of this paper is to measure the dynamic effects of listing price strategies and housing features on the probability of sale of a house based on listing periods\, by applying the Cox Probability Hazard Model for listing time in 1 month\, 3 months\, 6 months and 9 months of 448 transactions from the housing survey conducted in Ho Chi Minh City from September 2017 to May 2018.\nThe impact of the overprice listing strategy is found to be significant on the probability of sale in the first 30 days of listing time. The effect decreases and becomes ineffective when the listing duration exceeds 180 days. This shows that the first 30 listing days are very important and housing liquidity is affected strongly by selling strategies of seller.  If the time on market is over 30 days\, the power of sellers on housing liquidity will be restricted. \nAbout the presenter: Nguyen Thi Bich Hong and Truong Thanh Hiep are lecturers at the UEH School of Economics. Both Hong and Hiep graduated from the Vietnam – Netherlands Programme for Training the Master in Development and Applied Economics. Their research interested are Real Estate Economics\, Personnel Economics and Behavioral Economics.  \n\n\nSmall Talks Big Ideas (STBI) is a series of academic activities welcoming researchers\, students and anyone who are interested in economics and related disciplinary to share an innovative idea or research proposal\, to discuss an academic question or a policy-relevant issue\, a working paper with preliminary results or a recent published paper. SUMMARY:[STBI-191002] Regulations in the U.S. and Bond Market Liquidity
DESCRIPTION:Dear professors\, lecturers\, researchers\, colleagues\, and students\, \nYou are cordially invited to the next UEH School of Economics STBI (Small Talks Big Ideas) seminar. \nTopic: “Regulations in the U.S. and Bond Market Liquidity” \nPresenter: Ho Thi Nam Phuong (Victoria University of Wellington) \nTime: 11:00 – Wednesday\, 02 October\, 2019 \nVenue: Room H.001\, Campus H\, UEH School of Economics\, 1A Hoang Dieu\, Phu Nhuan District\, Ho Chi Minh City \nLanguage: Vietnamese \nAbstract:  \nThis paper investigates the impacts of financial regulations on bond market liquidity\, focusing on the U.S. regulations such as the Dodd-Frank Act and the Volcker Rule. Our analysis at market level and bond level suggest that the mentioned regulations do not harm the liquidity of the bond market as a whole. It is evident that the regulations actually improve the bond market liquidity\, especially for investment grade bonds. Non-investment grade bonds are not affected by changes in regulations. These findings are also evident in the event study of announcement effects regarding regulations milestones. The analysis also suggests that the transaction costs are affected by the changes in regulations more than the price impacts. Additionally\, the event study indicates that the anticipation of regulatory changes do lead to lower liquidity but these impacts only occur for big milestones and eventually die out. \n\nAbout the presenter: Ho Thi Nam Phuong is a recent graduate from Victoria University of Wellington with First Class Honours in Finance. She is now a teaching assistant at the VUW Ho Chi Minh City campus while participating in other research projects about corporate governance and market micro-structure.

SUMMARY:[STBI-190530] The emerging Vietnamese civil society since Doi Moi: new arenas to advocate for policy change.
DESCRIPTION:Dear professors\, lecturers\, researchers\, colleagues\, and students\, \nYou are cordially invited to the next UEH School of Economics STBI (Small Talks Big Ideas) seminar. \nTopic: “The emerging Vietnamese civil society since Doi Moi: new arenas to advocate for policy change.” \nPresenter: Sean Ghesquière (Ghent University\, Belgium) \nTime: 11:00 – Thursday\, 30 May 2019 \nVenue: Room H.001\, Campus H\, UEH School of Economics\, 1A Hoang Dieu\, Phu Nhuan District\, Ho Chi Minh City \nLanguage: Tiếng Anh \nAbstract: \nBefore the Renovation policy of 1986\, also known as Doi Moi\, most scholars had no difficulty in classifying the Vietnamese political practice as a Marxist-Leninist one. Since 1986\, state and society have reshuffled their cards. The Renovation has started off formidable changes for the Vietnamese state and society\, as well as for state-society relations. Due to the influx of foreign aid organizations and businesses\, Vietnam has encountered a rapid development with high GDP growth and the creation of a strong middle class. However\, the new economic and socio-political ‘model’  that was meant by the policy has not steadied yet. Therefore\, the debate between state and society remains afoot. In temporary Vietnam\, there is increasingly more contestation between both actors since the legitimacy of the Vietnamese Communist Party is once more under pressure due to increasing wage differences\, inflation\, corruption\, environmental pollution\, etcetera. \nDuring this presentation\, several theories for a better understanding of the (Vietnamese) state-society dynamic will be explained\, introducing the possibility for discussion on some present-day practical matters. Special attention will go to socio-political transformations in this setting\, taking the historical event of Doi Moi as an example.” \n\nAbout the presenter: \nSean Ghesquière is a master student Political Sciences at Ghent University\, Belgium. He is conducting research for his Master’s thesis in Hanoi. He wants to gain insight on the consequences of Doi Moi policy on civil society and its ability to influence (state) policy

SUMMARY:[STBI-190410] Application of Value at Risk Model to Portfolio Risk Management
DESCRIPTION:Dear professors\, lecturers\, researchers\, colleagues\, and students\, \nYou are cordially invited to the next UEH School of Economics STBI (Small Talks Big Ideas) seminar. \nTopic: Application of Value at Risk Model to Portfolio Risk Management. \nPresenter: Ph.D. Nguyễn Tuấn Duy (University of Finance-Marketing) \nTime: 11:00 – Wednesday\, 10 April 2019 \nVenue: Room H.001\, Campus H\, UEH School of Economics\, 1A Hoang Dieu\, Phu Nhuan District\, Ho Chi Minh City \nLanguage: Tiếng Việt \nAbstract: \nTrading in Vietnam stock market is in a volatile condition. Economic and political instabilities in Vietnam and region have posed challenges in making investment decisions. Thus\, an appropriate measure of portfolio risk is required. During two past decades\, several methods calculating VaR have been developed and significantly contributed to research in economics and finance. However\, those methods are built basing on strong assumptions such as the normal distribution of investment returns. This assumption proves impractical and rare in time series data. To deal with the limitations\, many approaches – E-VaR\, Stress test or Backtest are highly recommended to test the validity of VaR. This study employs the Backtest to test whether or not the VaR accurately represents reality. \nAbout the presenter: \nPh.D. Nguyễn Tuấn Duy is a lecturer of the faculty of fundamentals\, University of Finance – Marketing. His research interests are mathematical economics\, differential and integral Equations and Nonlinear analysis.

SUMMARY:[STBI-190314] The Impact of ESG on Stocks’ Downside Risk and Risk Adjusted Return
DESCRIPTION:Dear professors\, lecturers\, researchers\, colleagues\, and students\, \nYou are cordially invited to the next UEH School of Economics STBI (Small Talks Big Ideas) seminar. \nTopic: The Impact of ESG on Stocks’ Downside Risk and Risk Adjusted Return. \nPresenter: Prof. Hans Lööf (KTH Royal Institute of Technology\, Sweden) \nTime: 11:00 – Thursday\, 14 March 2019 \nVenue: Room H.001\, Campus H\, UEH School of Economics\, 1A Hoang Dieu\, Phu Nhuan District\, Ho Chi Minh City \nLanguage: English \nAbstract:  \nInvestments considering corporate social responsibility continue to expand. Are companies pursuing a CSR agenda benefiting shareholders by reducing their financial downside risk? This paper investigates the relationship between a firm’s environmental\, social and corporate governance (ESG) scores and its downside risk on the stock market. We study this link using a panel of 887 stocks listed in five European countries over the period 2005-2017. Our empirical results show that higher ESG scores are associated with reduced downside risk of stock returns. Based on the Fama-French three-factor model\, we found no systematic relationship between ESG and the level of risk-adjusted return. \nFull-text: http://www.tillvaxtanalys.se/in-english/publications/wp/wp/2019-02-27-the-impact-of-esg-on-stocks-downside-risk-and-risk-adjusted-return.html \nAbout the presenter:  \nProf. Hans Lööf is the head of Division of Economics\, Royal Institute of Technology. SUMMARY:[STBI-190123] Ownership\, Innovation\, Performance & Risk Shaping Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:Dear professors\, lecturers\, researchers\, colleagues\, and students\, \nYou are cordially invited to the next UEH School of Economics STBI (Small Talks Big Ideas) seminar with 2 presentations on \n \nFirm’s Ownership\, Innovation\, Performance & Risk Shaping Behaviors. \nTime: 11:00 – Wednesday\, 23 January\, 2019 \nVenue: Room H.001\, Campus H\, UEH School of Economics\, 1A Hoang Dieu\, Phu Nhuan District\, Ho Chi Minh City \nLanguage: Vietnamese \n  \nTopic 1: Ownership feature and firm performance via corporate innovation performance: Does it really matter for Vietnamese SMEs? \nAbstract: \nThe purpose of this study is to investigate the simultaneous relationship among ownership concentration\, innovation and firm performance of the small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam during the 2011–2015. By employing a Conditional Mixed Process (CMP) model\, the findings show that: there is no impact of ownership concentration on innovation\, but it has a positive impact on sales growth; innovation positively affects firm performance; and there exists a positively reverse causality from sales growth to innovation. \nFull-text: https://doi.org/10.1108/JABES-10-2018-0078 \n  \nTopic 2: Risk Shaping Behaviors by The Prospect Theory: How Can It Be Changed by Family’s Power and Quantile Regression? \nAbstract: \nEver since paper by Fama and French (1992)\, there is a diverse stream of literature that demonstrated the same vein of risk-return relationship but focus on the theorem of “Bowman paradox” (Shimizu\, 2007; Bromiley\, 2009 & 2010; Holmes et al.\, 2011; Kliger & Tsur\, 2011; and Lee & Li\, 2016). Among these\, there is one kind of study – “The Prospect Theory” that defines the new way of economist’s assumption that risk-return relationship will vary with the situation of market and company based on the possibility of reference target choice for changing managers’ attitude toward risk (Fiegenbaum\, 1990; Nickel & Rodriguez\, 2002). Nevertheless\, the current literature is largely inconclusive on the linkage between risk and return\, as there is the problem of “agent conflict”\, of the “stakeholder’s effects”\, or especially of the family ownership (Arregle et al. 2007; and Andres 2008; Gomez-Mejia et al. 2011\, and Berrone et al. 2012). In addition\, the prospect theory is usually specified by the two-fold hypothesis of risk aversion and risk-seeking behaviors\, while it could potentially be defined by the different level of risks and corporate performance. Acknowledged the above extensive literature\, this study would shed light on the following contributions. First\, this could be a very first new study analyzes the risk-return relationship within the mechanism of the “prospect theory”\, but on the view of the interventions of family’s power that it can direct the risk behavior. Second\, by using the modern technique of quantile regression for panel data\, this study will define the new literature gaps since it questions on the different level of risk-return behaviors rather than two-fold analysis. Third\, this study will also try to do some the robust analysis by testing different contexts – by examining different selected emerging markets of India\, Chinese\, Taiwan\, and Vietnam. \nPresenter: Nguyen Son Kien (Eastern International University) \nAbout the presenter: \nMr. Kien Nguyen is the graduate alumni of the Vietnam-Netherlands Program Class 20. SUMMARY:[STBI-190116] A behavior and economic framework to attack marine plastic pollution
DESCRIPTION:Dear professors\, lecturers\, researchers\, colleagues\, and students\, \nYou are cordially invited to the next UEH School of Economics STBI (Small Talks Big Ideas) seminar. \n \nThe details of the next STBI seminar are as follows: \nTopic: A Behavior and Economic Framework to Attack Marine Plastic Pollution \nPresenter: Dr. Ho Quoc Thong (Environment for Development – EfD Vietnam) \nTime: 11:00 – Wednesday\, January 16\, 2019 \nVenue: Room H.001\, Campus H\, UEH School of Economics\, 1A Hoang Dieu\, Phu Nhuan District\, Ho Chi Minh City \nLanguage: Vietnamese \nAbstract: \nMarine plastic debris pollution is both a global and a local problem with potentially severe consequences for wildlife\, economic activity\, and human health. The presentation will provide an overview of a framework for designing behavioral and economic tools to reduce marine debris. We also analyze a variety of market-based instruments and behavioral tools attacking the marine plastic pollution. We then use an impact pathway framework to make country-specific recommendations that reflect the reality of solid waste management in each of the countries selected as examples. This framework is also used to propose some further research directions toward the marine plastic debris in Vietnam. These research ideas will also be discussed. \nAbout the presenter: \nDr. Ho Quoc Thong is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Environment for Development – EfD Vietnam. He was awarded a PhD degree from School of Economics & Finance\, Queensland University of Technology\, Australia in 2018 and received a master degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa\, USA in 2011. His research focuses on efficiency and productivity analysis\, environmental performance and the use of behavioral economic approaches in analyzing environmental issues. His studies have been published in Journal of Economic Analysis and Policy\, Journal of Cleaner Production and Economic Record. \n\nSmall Talks Big Ideas is a series of academic activities welcoming researchers\, students and anyone who are interested in economics and related disciplinary to share an innovative idea or research proposal\, to discuss an academic question or a policy-relevant issue\, a working paper with preliminary results or a published paper. SUMMARY:[STBI-180914] The Self-Determination Theory
DESCRIPTION:Dear professors\, colleagues and students\,\nWe would like to invite you to participate in the 2018 STBI Brown Bag Series at the UEH School of Economics. \n \nWe welcome Dr. Thùy Vy Nguyễn to present her ideas during the Brown Bag Series Special Session. \n\nTopic: The Self-Determination Theory\nTime: 11:30 – Friday\, 14th September\, 2018\nVenue: Room H.001\, Campus H\, UEH School of Economics\, 1A Hoang Dieu street\, ward 10\, Phu Nhuan district\, HCMC\nThe language of presentation: Vietnamese\n\nAbstract \nDr. Thuỳ Vy Nguyễn will talk about the theoretical framework that has shaped most of her research questions\, the Self-Determination Theory (SDT). SDT is a theory about human motivation. At the core\, the theory explains why we do what we do and what are the ingredients for healthy motivation and psychological wellness. Initially developed by Drs. Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan\, SDT has been elaborated and refined by a network of scholars around the world. Specifically in this talk\, Dr. Nguyễn will discuss how SDT has been used as the framework to understand how teachers can help their students to engage in deep\, meaningful learning\, what make organizations succeed at supporting their employees’ well-being and reduce physical illness\, and why some people achieve their goals and live a healthy\, fulfilling life. \nSpeaker \nDr. Thuỳ Vy Nguyễn received her Ph.D from the University of Rochester under the supervision of the two world-renowned motivation researchers\, Drs. Edward Deci and Richard Ryan. Her current research focuses on the science of solitude and tries to understand how we can take advantage of daily doses of solitude to benefit our own psychological well-being. She is also an active advocate for the movement toward a more transparent and accessible science. Through her works\, she hopes to inspire people to own the choice that we make to strive for best of who we are\, to be present not only with ourselves but also with others\, and last but not least\, be authentic in our thoughts\, feelings\, behaviors\, and communication. \n\nTo get more information\, you can visit the website: http://se.ueh.edu.vn/vi/the-2018-stbi-brown-bag-series/ \nThe 2018 STBI (Small Talk Big Idea) Brown Bag Series is built upon the success of the STBI Seminar. This year\, the organizing team has decided to experiment with a new format to make the event less formal and more open. It is held from 11:30 a.m to 12:15 p.m. and the speaker and audience will have 10 minutes to mingle and complete their lunch of bánh mì which is normally wrapped in brown bags. The School of Economics will provide free coffee and water for everyone and a sandwich/bánh mì lunch for the speaker. If the weather permits\, the presentation will be held in the lobby area at the School’s venue on Hoang Dieu Street\, Phu Nhuan District. \nYou are encouraged to bring your own bánh mì for lunch and mingle with the speaker at the beginning of the session. \nOrganizing Team

SUMMARY:[STBI-180731] Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Global Production of Coffee: A Panel Data Analysis of Exporting Countries
DESCRIPTION:Dear professors\, colleagues and students\,\nWe would like to invite you to participate in the 2018 STBI Brown Bag Series at the UEH School of Economics. \nWe welcome Dr. Le Vu Quan to present his ideas during the Brown Bag session. \nTopic: Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Global Production of Coffee: A Panel Data Analysis of Exporting Countries \nTime: 11:30 – Tuesday\, 31th July\, 2018 \nVenue: Room H.001\, Campus H\, UEH School of Economics\, 1A Hoang Dieu\, Phu Nhuan District \nThe language of presentation: Vietnamese \nAbstract \nWe develop a model to understand the future of global coffee production in the face of climate change. To get a holistic perspective\, we examine the entire global coffee supply covering a period of over 20 years from 1992-2015. The novelty of this paper is the way we construct instrumental variables. Generally\, it is difficult or practically impossible to find instrumental variables that are uncorrelated with the regressors. Our modelling approach allows us to construct such series that are guaranteed to be uncorrelated with any regressors we will use. This is possible because we were able to extrapolate structural shocks such as supply\, demand and speculative shocks in the coffee market\, and then use those shocks as instrumental variables. We find that there is a positive effect of increase in prices paid to farmers and the supply of coffee. In addition\, by including structural coffee market shocks as instrumental variables in the fixed effects model\, we find that climatic variables tend to underestimate the effects of supply shocks on the quantity of coffee grown. By using this model\, we believe that we can deliver a more accurate understating of price elasticity and the potential impacts of climate change on global production of coffee. \nSpeaker: Le Vu Quan \nEva Albers Professor of Economics and Director of the International Business Programs at Seattle University. Dr. Le teaches primarily in the areas of international economics\, macroeconomics\, and economic development. His research is in the areas of institutions\, governance\, global health\, and entrepreneurship. SUMMARY:[STBI-180720] Economic and non-economic returns to Communist Party membership in Viet Nam
DESCRIPTION:Dear professors\, colleagues and students\, \nWe would like to invite you to participate in the 2018 STBI Brown Bag Series at the UEH School of Economics. \nWe welcome Dr. Ngo Quang Thanh to present his ideas during the Brown Bag session. \nTopic: Economic and non-economic returns to Communist Party membership in Viet Nam \nTime: 11:30 – Friday\, 20th July\, 2018 \nVenue: Room H.001\, Campus H\, UEH School of Economics\, 1A Hoang Dieu\, Phu Nhuan District \nThe language of presentation: Vietnamese \nAbstract \nSingle-party political systems exist in a number of countries\, such as China and Viet Nam. In these countries\, party membership is potentially an important source of economic and social status. This paper investigates these effects and the mechanisms behind them. In particular\, we use household- and individual-level panel data to analyse the causes and consequences of Communist Party membership in rural areas of Viet Nam. Fixed effects models are employed to control for unobserved differences between party members and others. \nResults suggest that party membership has a moderate positive effect on income\, on the order of seven per cent\, and a large positive effect on subjective well-being\, even after controlling for income. Party membership is closely associated with working for the government but also appears to increase the propensity to use credit and to boost income from farm and non-farm enterprises. There are strong gender effects: men are several times more likely to be party members than women\, and the effects of membership on income and subjective well-being are only present among men. Overall\, results confirm that in spite of pro-market economic reforms\, Communist Party membership continues to be of high value in rural Viet Nam. \nSpeaker: Ngo Quang Thanh \nNgo Quang Thanh is a Senior Research Fellow at the Southern Center for Agriculture Policy and Strategy\, Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture Rural Development. His expertise and research interests focus on development issues using quantitative analysis tools\, including both contemporary econometric technique and the spatial one. Recent topics of his work include: the political economy of membership’s Communist Party of Vietnam; climate change and agriculture production; SMEs and technology change; and migration. Currently\, Ngo Quang Thanh lives in Ho Chi Minh City\, Vietnam.
