DESCRIPTION:The impact of Decree 100 on the drinking and drunk-driving behavior in Ho Chi Minh City\nStudent: Đặng Cửu Trinh\, VNP 24 \nSupervisor: Dr. Võ Tất Thắng \nAbstract: \nThe study aims to investigate the impact of the new BAC limits law on the frequency of drinking and drunk-driving in Ho Chi Minh City. The new level of BAC is the main content of the new decree\, called shortly Decree 100. The government issued Decree 100 with an expectation that it will reduce the negative behavior after alcohol drinking\, especially drunk-driving behavior. The study uses the difference-in-difference approach to estimate the primary data collected from the online survey. The study finds that Decree 100 positively impacts the monthly average number of driving after drinking. The significant magnitude of the effect varies from -0.623 to -0.642. These values imply that Decree 100 is associated with a 0.623 to 0.642 reduction in the monthly average number of drunk-driving. DESCRIPTION:Does the feedback effect from foreign investment to environmental regulation matter? \nStudent: Đặng Vũ Thanh\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Đức Võ \nAbstract: \nForeign investment and environmental regulations are generally considered a two-way relationship. The effect of environmental regulation to foreign investment has been intensively examined in previous empirical studies.  However\, the reverse relationship has largely been ignored. As such\, this study is conducted to examined the feedback effects from foreign investment on environmental regulations under the influence of host countries’ political institutions for 26 OECD countries during the period 1990-2015. The study makes contributions to the literature in three dimensions. First\, this is one of the few studies examining the reverse relationship in the Pollution haven hypothesis. Second\, we use OECD’s newly-developed environmental policy stringency index\, which is believed to be a more comprehensive measure for environmental regulations than previous ones. Third\, we investigate the long-run relationship between foreign investment and environmental regulation\, which has largely been neglected in the literature.  Empirical results from this study are consistent with the firm lobby model\, indicating that foreign investment does exert negative influence on environment policies because of the lobbying effect. However\, if the number of legislative units is large enough\, the lobbying effect is negated and the governments are likely to impose stricter pollution tax to maximize social welfare. Analyzing the sub-samples\, the effects do not translate to the upper-income countries\, where FDI is found to improve environmental regulations. DESCRIPTION:The influence of technological innovation on labor force participation: Cross-country evidence \nStudent: Nguyễn Thế Hoàng\, VNP 25 \nSupervisor: Dr. Lê Văn Chơn \nAbstract: \nStructural and economic changes have led to the alteration in labor force participation (LFP) across the globe. This research pays attention to the role of technological innovation on labor force participation\, especially for both male (MLFP) and female (FLFP). The main objective is to investigate whether technological advancement can adjust LFP\, MLFP\, and FLFP. The study collects data from the World Bank during the period of 2000 – 2018\, including 197 countries around the world. The research applies two different econometric approaches\, static and dynamic respectively. The static approach does not take the lagged dependent variable into account\, while the dynamic one considers the lagged dependent variable. Out of the three techniques\, the most suitable one is Random Effect Model for the static approach. In the dynamic approach\, the paper uses the System GMM technique. The usage of different techniques can help check the robustness and consistency of all research models. Besides\, the study recommends that the government should advance technological innovation to encourage women to participate in the labor force. \nKeywords: technological innovation\, labor force participation\, R&D expenditure\, System GMM. \n

DESCRIPTION:Retail loans and factors effecting profitability of Vietnamese listed banks\nStudent: Đinh Việt Linh\, VNP 24 \nSupervisor: Dr. Phạm Phú Quốc \nAbstract: \nThis study investigates the impact of retail lending section development in business structure and other determinants of profitability and on listed bank profitability between 2008 and 2018. \nThe findings provide several implications for policy-makers and bank managers. This suggests state-owned commercial banks should be approached by more customers with caution and attracted strategy. First\, the interest rate policy should be rational while continuously implementing it as a key competitive strategy. Second\, banks should manage credit risks\, liquidity risk\, and other risks effectively with regards to costs associated. In addition to the continuing effort to fully implementing BASEL II system\, banks should develop and manage an effective risk management strategy in a cost-effective way. Third\, commercial banks should pay more attention for R&D activities that incorporate more technology advancement into their lending and risk assessing process for retail customers. Finally\, commercial banks should diversify their market segments and services.

DESCRIPTION:Dear researchers and students\,\nYou are cordially invited to the next STBI seminar.\n\nTopic: The Role of Listing Price Strategies on the Probability of Sale for House: Evidence in Vietnam \nPresenter: Nguyen Thi Bich Hong and Truong Thanh Hiep (UEH School of Economics) \nTime: 11:00 – Friday\, 18 October\, 2019 \nVenue: Room H.001\, Campus H\, UEH School of Economics\, 1A Hoang Dieu\, Phu Nhuan District\, Ho Chi Minh City \nLanguage: Vietnamese \nAbstract: The aim of this paper is to measure the dynamic effects of listing price strategies and housing features on the probability of sale of a house based on listing periods\, by applying the Cox Probability Hazard Model for listing time in 1 month\, 3 months\, 6 months and 9 months of 448 transactions from the housing survey conducted in Ho Chi Minh City from September 2017 to May 2018.\nThe impact of the overprice listing strategy is found to be significant on the probability of sale in the first 30 days of listing time. The effect decreases and becomes ineffective when the listing duration exceeds 180 days. This shows that the first 30 listing days are very important and housing liquidity is affected strongly by selling strategies of seller.  If the time on market is over 30 days\, the power of sellers on housing liquidity will be restricted. \nAbout the presenter: Nguyen Thi Bich Hong and Truong Thanh Hiep are lecturers at the UEH School of Economics. Both Hong and Hiep graduated from the Vietnam – Netherlands Programme for Training the Master in Development and Applied Economics. Our analysis at market level and bond level suggest that the mentioned regulations do not harm the liquidity of the bond market as a whole. It is evident that the regulations actually improve the bond market liquidity\, especially for investment grade bonds. Non-investment grade bonds are not affected by changes in regulations. These findings are also evident in the event study of announcement effects regarding regulations milestones. The analysis also suggests that the transaction costs are affected by the changes in regulations more than the price impacts. Additionally\, the event study indicates that the anticipation of regulatory changes do lead to lower liquidity but these impacts only occur for big milestones and eventually die out. \n\nAbout the presenter: Ho Thi Nam Phuong is a recent graduate from Victoria University of Wellington with First Class Honours in Finance. She is now a teaching assistant at the VUW Ho Chi Minh City campus while participating in other research projects about corporate governance and market micro-structure.

Since 1986\, state and society have reshuffled their cards. The Renovation has started off formidable changes for the Vietnamese state and society\, as well as for state-society relations. Due to the influx of foreign aid organizations and businesses\, Vietnam has encountered a rapid development with high GDP growth and the creation of a strong middle class. However\, the new economic and socio-political ‘model’  that was meant by the policy has not steadied yet. Therefore\, the debate between state and society remains afoot. In temporary Vietnam\, there is increasingly more contestation between both actors since the legitimacy of the Vietnamese Communist Party is once more under pressure due to increasing wage differences\, inflation\, corruption\, environmental pollution\, etcetera. \nDuring this presentation\, several theories for a better understanding of the (Vietnamese) state-society dynamic will be explained\, introducing the possibility for discussion on some present-day practical matters. Economic and political instabilities in Vietnam and region have posed challenges in making investment decisions. Thus\, an appropriate measure of portfolio risk is required. During two past decades\, several methods calculating VaR have been developed and significantly contributed to research in economics and finance. However\, those methods are built basing on strong assumptions such as the normal distribution of investment returns. This assumption proves impractical and rare in time series data. To deal with the limitations\, many approaches – E-VaR\, Stress test or Backtest are highly recommended to test the validity of VaR. This paper investigates the relationship between a firm’s environmental\, social and corporate governance (ESG) scores and its downside risk on the stock market. We study this link using a panel of 887 stocks listed in five European countries over the period 2005-2017. Our empirical results show that higher ESG scores are associated with reduced downside risk of stock returns. By employing a Conditional Mixed Process (CMP) model\, the findings show that: there is no impact of ownership concentration on innovation\, but it has a positive impact on sales growth; innovation positively affects firm performance; and there exists a positively reverse causality from sales growth to innovation. \nFull-text: https://doi.org/10.1108/JABES-10-2018-0078 \n  \nTopic 2: Risk Shaping Behaviors by The Prospect Theory: How Can It Be Changed by Family’s Power and Quantile Regression? \nAbstract: \nEver since paper by Fama and French (1992)\, there is a diverse stream of literature that demonstrated the same vein of risk-return relationship but focus on the theorem of “Bowman paradox” (Shimizu\, 2007; Bromiley\, 2009 & 2010; Holmes et al.\, 2011; Kliger & Tsur\, 2011; and Lee & Li\, 2016). Among these\, there is one kind of study – “The Prospect Theory” that defines the new way of economist’s assumption that risk-return relationship will vary with the situation of market and company based on the possibility of reference target choice for changing managers’ attitude toward risk (Fiegenbaum\, 1990; Nickel & Rodriguez\, 2002). Nevertheless\, the current literature is largely inconclusive on the linkage between risk and return\, as there is the problem of “agent conflict”\, of the “stakeholder’s effects”\, or especially of the family ownership (Arregle et al. 2007; and Andres 2008; Gomez-Mejia et al. 2011\, and Berrone et al. 2012). In addition\, the prospect theory is usually specified by the two-fold hypothesis of risk aversion and risk-seeking behaviors\, while it could potentially be defined by the different level of risks and corporate performance. Acknowledged the above extensive literature\, this study would shed light on the following contributions. First\, this could be a very first new study analyzes the risk-return relationship within the mechanism of the “prospect theory”\, but on the view of the interventions of family’s power that it can direct the risk behavior. Second\, by using the modern technique of quantile regression for panel data\, this study will define the new literature gaps since it questions on the different level of risk-return behaviors rather than two-fold analysis. Third\, this study will also try to do some the robust analysis by testing different contexts – by examining different selected emerging markets of India\, Chinese\, Taiwan\, and Vietnam. \nPresenter: Nguyen Son Kien (Eastern International University) \nAbout the presenter: \nMr. Kien Nguyen is the graduate alumni of the Vietnam-Netherlands Program Class 20. The presentation will provide an overview of a framework for designing behavioral and economic tools to reduce marine debris. We also analyze a variety of market-based instruments and behavioral tools attacking the marine plastic pollution. We then use an impact pathway framework to make country-specific recommendations that reflect the reality of solid waste management in each of the countries selected as examples. This framework is also used to propose some further research directions toward the marine plastic debris in Vietnam. These research ideas will also be discussed. \nAbout the presenter: \nDr. Ho Quoc Thong is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Environment for Development – EfD Vietnam. He was awarded a PhD degree from School of Economics & Finance\, Queensland University of Technology\, Australia in 2018 and received a master degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa\, USA in 2011. His research focuses on efficiency and productivity analysis\, environmental performance and the use of behavioral economic approaches in analyzing environmental issues. SDT is a theory about human motivation. At the core\, the theory explains why we do what we do and what are the ingredients for healthy motivation and psychological wellness. Initially developed by Drs. Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan\, SDT has been elaborated and refined by a network of scholars around the world. Specifically in this talk\, Dr. Nguyễn will discuss how SDT has been used as the framework to understand how teachers can help their students to engage in deep\, meaningful learning\, what make organizations succeed at supporting their employees’ well-being and reduce physical illness\, and why some people achieve their goals and live a healthy\, fulfilling life. \nSpeaker \nDr. Thuỳ Vy Nguyễn received her Ph.D from the University of Rochester under the supervision of the two world-renowned motivation researchers\, Drs. Edward Deci and Richard Ryan. Her current research focuses on the science of solitude and tries to understand how we can take advantage of daily doses of solitude to benefit our own psychological well-being. To get a holistic perspective\, we examine the entire global coffee supply covering a period of over 20 years from 1992-2015. The novelty of this paper is the way we construct instrumental variables. Generally\, it is difficult or practically impossible to find instrumental variables that are uncorrelated with the regressors. Our modelling approach allows us to construct such series that are guaranteed to be uncorrelated with any regressors we will use. This is possible because we were able to extrapolate structural shocks such as supply\, demand and speculative shocks in the coffee market\, and then use those shocks as instrumental variables. We find that there is a positive effect of increase in prices paid to farmers and the supply of coffee. In addition\, by including structural coffee market shocks as instrumental variables in the fixed effects model\, we find that climatic variables tend to underestimate the effects of supply shocks on the quantity of coffee grown. By using this model\, we believe that we can deliver a more accurate understating of price elasticity and the potential impacts of climate change on global production of coffee. \nSpeaker: Le Vu Quan \nEva Albers Professor of Economics and Director of the International Business Programs at Seattle University. Dr. Le teaches primarily in the areas of international economics\, macroeconomics\, and economic development. His research is in the areas of institutions\, governance\, global health\, and entrepreneurship. He has been published in a number of academic journals including Journal of International Money and Finance\, International Review of Financial Analysis\, Public Health\, and International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour & Research. Dr. Le has twice been a recipient of the Fulbright Scholar – in 2005-2006 at the Vietnam National University in Hanoi and in 2015-2016 at the Fulbright Economics Teaching Program in Ho Chi Minh City. He is a regular visiting faculty at several universities in Vietnam. In these countries\, party membership is potentially an important source of economic and social status. This paper investigates these effects and the mechanisms behind them. In particular\, we use household- and individual-level panel data to analyse the causes and consequences of Communist Party membership in rural areas of Viet Nam. Fixed effects models are employed to control for unobserved differences between party members and others. \nResults suggest that party membership has a moderate positive effect on income\, on the order of seven per cent\, and a large positive effect on subjective well-being\, even after controlling for income. Party membership is closely associated with working for the government but also appears to increase the propensity to use credit and to boost income from farm and non-farm enterprises. There are strong gender effects: men are several times more likely to be party members than women\, and the effects of membership on income and subjective well-being are only present among men. Overall\, results confirm that in spite of pro-market economic reforms\, Communist Party membership continues to be of high value in rural Viet Nam. \nSpeaker: Ngo Quang Thanh \nNgo Quang Thanh is a Senior Research Fellow at the Southern Center for Agriculture Policy and Strategy\, Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture Rural Development. To quantify heat-related deaths in Ho Chi Minh City\, Vietnam\, caused by the urban heat island (UHI) and explore factors that may alleviate the impact of UHIs. \nMethods. We estimated district-specific meteorological conditions from 2010 to 2013 using the dynamic downscaling model and calculated the attributable fraction and number of mortalities resulting from the total\, extreme\, and mild heat in each district. The difference in attributable fraction of total heat between the central and outer districts was classified as the attributable fraction resulting from the UHI. The association among attributable fraction\, attributable number with a green space\, population density\, and budget revenue of each district was then explored. \nResults. The temperature–mortality relationship between the central and outer areas was almost identical. The attributable fraction resulting from the UHI was 0.42%\, which was contributed by the difference in temperature distribution between the 2 areas. Every 1-square-kilometer increase in green space per 1000 people can prevent 7.4 deaths caused by heat. \nConclusions. Green space can alleviate the impacts of UHIs\, although future studies conducting a heath economic evaluation of tree planting are warranted. \nSpeaker: Tran Ngoc Dang \nDr. Tran Ngoc Dang\, is currently a lecturer in Department of Environmental Health\, University of Medicine and Pharmacy\, Ho Chi Minh City (UMP HCMC). He obtained his bachelor degree in Public Health from UMP HCMC in 2010. He got the Japanese Government scholarship (MEXT) to pursue his master of Public Health degree\, majoring in molecular epidemiology; and the doctoral degree majoring in environmental epidemiology at the university of Tsukuba in 2014\, and 2017 respectively. So far he has published about 20 peer-reviewed publications in ISI international journals\, including prestigious journals such as Environmental Health Perspective\, American Journal of Public Health\, Scientific Reports\, Plos Neglected Tropical Diseases\, Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy\, BMC Medical Genetics. \nHe has involved in a project funded by National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED)\, in which he plays a role as a data analyst. Dang has expertise and solid skills in biostatistics. He also the founder of “Bayes for Vietnam” website\, where people share tutorials on how applying Bayesian using R into medical sciences (https://sites.google.com/site/bayesforvietnam/).
