Binyam Afewerk Demena is an empirical economist with expertise across economic disciplines focusing on the area of development, environment, and health. He has extensive research experience in several fields related to systematic research synthesis and meta-analysis. He has participated in several impact evaluation projects ranging from international trade, investment, economic conflicts and sanctions to public health, public governance, rural infrastructure programs, and to informal economy and enterprises, applying observational, experimental, and quasi-experimental evaluation techniques. He has a track record of published research in peer-reviewed scientific journals, among others in Energy Economics, Energy Policy, Labour Economics, Journal of Economic Surveys, AIDS Patient Care and STDs, Applied Economics, and Third World Quarterly. He has solid field research experience in low- and middle-income countries. He is currently deputy coordinator and principal investigator of a targeted EU/ACP financed research projectOpent extern that aims to strengthen capacity of policy makers, exporters, and trade associations with REPOAOpent extern in Tanzania. The research is titled: Targeted support to strengthen capacity of policy makers, exporters, and trade associations to assess and review trade and related economic policies to promote trade competitiveness and diversification for widening trading opportunities with the EU. The project uses a multi-dimensional approach comprising knowledge generation (first pillar), capacity building (second pillar) and value chain development (third pillar). The project is funded by the Secretariat of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP). He is also a principal investigator of a research project funded by the Local Engagement Facility (LEF)Opent extern exploring the impact of COVID-19 and the measures taken by marginalized or (often) overlooked groups of people in the City of The Hague, The Netherlands. The project is titled as Experiences of recent Habesha migrants to the NetherlandsOpent extern. Additional to his experience as a researcher, he has gained ample experience as a teacher, mostly in the field of Economics, research methodology and critical assessment of scientific literature. He has acquired the University Teaching Qualification (Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs, BKO) assessed by means of a teaching portfolio in the development of Education, teaching activities, student guidance, use of ICT in education, assessment, and evaluation. He holds a PhD and MA in Development Studies (with a focus on Development Economics) from the ISS, Erasmus University Rotterdam in The Netherlands, and a BA in Economics from the University of Asmara. He also has Cisco Networking Academy Certifications for IT Essentials.
